TARGET: DON'T MAKE ME HATE YOU
From Crazy Virgo via bitemycookie comes this latest bit of outrageousness: Target pharmacists have apparently been given carte blanche to determine who does and doesn't get birth control pills and other contraceptives. Apparently doling out the meds goes against some pharmacists' beliefs.
Ohhhhhh hooooooo, really?
Then what business do you have being a pharmacist in the first place? Go get another fucking job already. Last time I checked, contraceptives weren't illegal. Target—don't make me boycott you. Cuz I will.
If this pisses you off, too, please visit saveRoe.com and make your voice heard.

That surprises me about Target. I knew Safeway didn't fill BC pills due to being affliated with the Catholic church. I already boycott Wal-Mart! I'd hate to have to add Target to the list too. :(

You know, I've made a real effort to keep politics off my blog, but this insanity enrages me to the point where I just have to say something about it, I think. What the fuck?? This has been going on for a while now and I think that a lot of people really don't know about it. It's time to spread the word. Thanks for doing your part, CityMama. We already boycott Walmart and Safeway - what's one more? Target can suck my left one.

I've been wanting to copy BMC and CV, too. I'm not spending money at Target for a while, it can suck my left one, too.

Grr. This makes me so angry. I shop at Target regularly because I thought they had good company policies. I just sent them an angry email, though.
I can't imagine walking up to a pharmacist unsure of whether they would serve you or not.
(BTW, I tried to trackback to your post but haloscan wouldn't let me)

I'm so glad you posted this; I sent the note on too. Thanks for getting the info out; I almost went to Target today to buy the boy some underwear - I think I'll shop elsewhere.

So it is against the belief of people to sell birth control pills, but you can get everything for a good batch of meth at Target... What a great world we live in!

This might be interesting to you guys...
I wrote an email to Target about the issue and the rely contained the following:
Like many other retailers, Target has a policy that ensures a guest's prescription for emergency contraception is filled, wh ether at Target orat a different pharmacy, in a timely and respectful manner.
Somehow I stumbled over the word "Emgergency" -- CT,are we are talking about the pill after or regular birth control? Not that it makes a difference...

benignneglect, I received the same email reply.
"At Target or at a different pharmacy??"
What does that section even mean - that either they'll fill your prescription or they'll send you off to a different place? Gosh, Target, thanks! That's so helpful.
Btw, I didn't mention EC in my email at all - I guess they just assume that that's the medication you're referring to.

I have heard of independent pharms doing this, but Target?!?
Hello, since when does the monkey who counts the pills have a medical degree that overrides a doctor, and a license to practice law that overrides a legal prescription?

Oh, so after signing the petition, I got this from Target:
Dear Target Guest,
Target is extremely disappointed that Planned Parenthood is spreading misleading information about an alleged incident at a Target pharmacy in Missouri and our policies on emergency contraception. The accounts being reported are inaccurate and exaggerated. Our policy is comparable to that of many other national retailers and the recommendations of the American Pharmacists Association.
Target consistently ensures that prescriptions for emergency contraception are filled. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we also are legally required to accommodate our team members’ sincerely held religious beliefs as required by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In the unusual event that a Target pharmacist’s sincerely held religious beliefs conflict with filling a guest’s prescription for emergency contraception, Target policy requires our pharmacists to take responsibility for ensuring that the guest’s prescription is filled in a timely and respectful manner. If it is not done in this manner, disciplinary action will be taken.
Target abides by all state and local laws and, in the event that other laws conflict with our policy, we will follow the law.
We appreciate the opportunity to clarify our position and correct misinformation.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Hanson
