  • Restaurants serving tap instead of bottled water. I like sparkling water lots, but this makes me happy. When I read a couple of years ago about how much plastic from discarded water bottles are in landfills, I pretty much stopped buying water in bottles and started refilling a sports bottle from my Brita. Sometimes, bottled water is convenient, but if you are someone who buys it buy the case regularly, just think of all the plastic you are consuming.
  • Moms Rising. I went to a Moms Rising houseparty sponsored by Maya's Mom last night. I am completely fired up now. Did you know that the US lags behind every westernized country in the world (except Lesotho/Swaziland and Papua New Guinea) when it comes to paid family leave? Did you know that 40,000 KINDERGARTNERS are home alone every afternoon alone because their parents work and can't afford child care? I encourage everyone reading this to 1) Familiarize yourself with Mom's Rising principles. 2) Watch the DVD (with friends) and/or read the book then pass it along. 3) Join Maya's Mom and then join the Maya's Moms Rising group. 4) Fight for the rights of working mothers and families. If you are an armchair activist, this group is perfect for you. You don't need to "do" anything accept read-click-act. Something must be done. Now.
  • 700 Belgian couples in anti-racist wedding. Not wanting to be married by someone just because of their race? A-holes.
  • Vote for the Worst. May explain why Sanjaya is still hanging around American Idol. Too bad it didn't work on Taylor Hicks.

Yes, family leave sucks, especially when you have a real crisis. Nothing like worrying over your kid's survival AND your job. Until I had a child born with cancer, I was an armchair activist as well. Now I have taken up the fight for funding pediatric cancer research. (See what lengths I go to: http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/

Looks like I need to work on this one as well.
