Little Froggie Girl
Last Christmas she took swimming lessons for the first time. She would rather have stuck to the steps in the shallow end.
This spring, we took lessons together, and she screamed the entire time. What a waste of sixty bucks.
Earlier this summer, while we were in Hawaii, she took lessons again. Three times a week for a month plus daily swims in the pool and ocean. She gained confidence and by the end of the month, her face was fully underwater, her kicks were strong, and she could paddle around on her own in shallow-enough water.
Now it's goggles on, a big inhale, face in the water, bum up, and my little Froggie Girl kicks herself across the pool. Underwater. Actually swims. And she's not even three.
Yes, I'm talking about Wallie, and it must be seen to be believed.
She loves swimming so much that it's the reason we go to the pool almost everyday. "Back up, Mamma!" she says. "I wanna swim to you farder!" She loves swimming so much that she no longer walks places, she "swims." Before getting down from the table she inhales, squeezes her eyes shut, then "doggy paddles" where she needs to go.
She's my girl, alright.
"No more floaties for me!"

Practice makes perfect! It's so awesome to see her all grown up doing the 'froggy paddle' (?)!!!! I can't wait to get The Big Guy into lessons next month! I'm anticipating the screaming...

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that I love your blog. I don't have a blog but really enjoy reading yours, it's the first thing I read every morning.
I am coming to CA on 7/20 and leaving 7/28, flying into SF and staying with my father in Manteca.
I have an 11 year old daughter and wondered if you could suggest any thing/place to do/eat.
I do love to eat! If you have any ideas I would be very thankful.
Keep up the good work.
Karen

It's great that she has so much confidence. I can almost picture her swimming around the house...

Looks like you've got a fish in your house.

Wonderful! We'll look for her in the Olympics some day. Or maybe she'll be the one swimming the English Channel!

Oh, she is charming! Good for her ... and what a great way to build her self-confidence.
Cheers!

yay! we were *just* talking about this at work. that if you're around water as a young child, you are more likely to be more comfortable swimmimng as an adult because you were exposed to it earlier. i loove swimming but that's because my parents had a pool and i took swimming lessons at the local pool. the BF on the otherhand, he's a true city boy with no pool growing up and really didn't swim as a kid. as a result, he doesn't like swimming.
be a fish wallie!

Ohhhh, I love a kid in the water. It is such a gasp of independence and freedom. Good for Wallie-grrrl.

Very cool! LA Toddler took right to it. But she surprised me when she decided that she liked to DIVE, too. It actually kinda scares me that this child has no fear...
