New Year's Eve in my family has always been about eating the most special, the most delicious, the most luxurious foods...Why we wait an entire year to do it up is beyond me once I see everything in front of me. My New Year's resolution is going to be not waiting 364 days to have a sushi party or to eat spoonfuls of caviar.
Bro is here and drove up to the Russian market in San Francisco this morning for caviar and sausages. I headed the opposite direction for sushi party fixings. Tonight will be a noshy night and we'll cap the evening by eating our traditional New Year's midnight snack: Korean dumpling soup.
This is what we've got goin' on so far, with pictorial updates throughout the evening. Happy New Year, everyone!

Only in my house, this craziness: fresh shiso, Japanese mayo, panettone, Korean roasted seaweed, peach-jalapeño sauce and spicy Russian mustard (for the Virginia ham), margarita mix, and a giant bottle of gin.

A pound of tobiko (flying fish roe). good thing it freezes well.

A match made in Nigella heaven.

Oxtails ready to roast in the oven for two hours (for soup later) in my new cast-iron pot.
Now I am going to go cut up the ahi for the sashimi and poke! Back in a bit with pictures.

Uh huh. That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.
...with my bro's version of St. Elmo's Steakhouse cocktail sauce. (Pretty much all fresh horseradish.)
Someone who knows what time it is.

An assortment of Korean rice cakes.

The Costco vodka. The entire bottle finished by 9PM. Mainly by my brother. Who is still drunk.
Now the countdown to midnight begins when we will have the Korean dumpling soup.
