What are you cooking for Christmas?
Over on The Poop, Mike is asking everyone what they are cooking for Christmas (for those that celebrate it). I loved reading the comments. Everything sounds so yummy!
If we were at my mom's we'd probably be eating standing rib roast and Yorkshire pudding on Christmas Eve and spending Christmas Day at the family Christmas party.
When I cook Christmas Eve dinner when we aren't traveling, I like to pay tribute to my Italian heritage by serving a seafood-only meal. This year I think we'll keep it simple and have Dungeness crab (cracked and cleaned by the fish monger), Caesar salad, and warm, crusty bread. Hmmm. Maybe I'll also get some clam chowdah when I pick up the crab. Feast of the two fishes.
On Christmas Day I'm making baked french toast and sausages for breakfast, then we're potlucking a late lunch over at J.'s grandfather's house. I'm bringing the side dishes. I also have lots of nosh (cheese, cold cuts, fruit, crackers) on hand for dinner if we are hungry later, and one of those fancy Trader Joe's frozen chocolate cake thingies in the freezer for dessert.
J. requested Beef Stroganoff as one of the meals he would like at some point either before or after Christmas. I made it for him years ago and he remembers it fondly. It's been so long, though, that I don't remember which recipe I used. I went fancy and bought some fillet mignons to slice up and some shallots and shiitakes, but other than that, anyone have a good Beef Stroganoff recipe, the easier the better?

I can't help with the beef stroganoff recipe, but am curious to see what turns up.
Which chocolate cake from TJ's do you have? I need another chocolatey dessert for Christmas day, and this sounds like just what I'm looking for (i.e. EASY).

On Sunday our neighbor is having the neighborhood christmas party, and I'm bringing prime rib. That was not the original plan, but our local market had it for $4 a pound (yes, you read that right!).
On Christmas eve we will probably go Danish with herring, pate, meatballs, rye bread, red cabbage, etc.
Christmas day we are hosting brunch, and I'm doing ham.

Christmas Eve traditional dinner at our place is a (German?) dish? I don't know what it's called, maybe it's a Polish dish? Anyway it has sauerkraut with sausage, pork chop, and ham in it with loads of cooked onions served over boiled potatoes. Doesn't sound like much but it's yummy. This year for Christmas (with family gathered) brunch I'm making mini zucchini fritatta(e), sausage, mushroom turnovers, mini croissants, and fresh fruit, For dinner we're having rib roast, wild rice with chestnuts, garlic-bacon mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, and a salad. For dessert it's apple bread pudding with ice cream plus various other desserty items like brownies and cookies.

We cook up a HUGE pot of cioppino with bunches of Dungeness crab, mussels, clams, big prawns, scallops, salmon chunks, white fish (cod, this year) and a rich, spicy Italian cioppino sauce, made with fresh tomatoes and lots of peppers! I cook up a pot of fettucini, bake 2 loaves of fresh, crusty bread, and open up bottles of red wine!

I have a Beef Stroganoff recipe, super easy, from my mom that we make with flank steak but now I want to try it with filet mignon...hadn't even thought of that. I will email it to you...it's largely one of those "mom" recipes where you'll have to guesstimate since it's all in my head:)

tradition is a brunch buffet at Willow's Christmas morningish after gifts. and then i plan to make korean style kko-chi-jang pork ribs for dinner. it's a favorite in our family but a little time consuming so i try to make it special on days we spend together.
i love hearing what everyone else is going to eat. what a great idea!

There is a stroganoff recipe on Simply Recipes that looks good. As for Christmas, we are doing: a beef braised in red wine, garlic, veggies, etc.; roasted brussels sprouts (along with rabe, my one year old's favorite food, probably because I ate so many strong veggies when I was pregnant with him, since my cravings were out of control); a parsnip, apple, shallot puree; roasted delicata squash with cranberries and onions; and something crunchy/and or cold so that everything isn't roasted, maybe a salad with endives and dried cherries or something with fennel, I will decide at the store....
Whatever strog. recipe you choose, will you let us know how it turns out? I want to make something like that soon (although must come up with a sour cream sub as we don't eat any milk products bc of a kiddie with allergies).

We're having the exact same thing for christmas morning. Soo easy to make. Even better to eat.
(We tried the straganoff with filet a year or so ago, crazed -- mmmmmmm.)
