Meal Planning Monday—4/28/08

I aim to have my menus posted in the morning, but gah. These are getting later and later in the day. Or week.

Yesterday, because the weather was so beautiful and hot, the farmer's market was bustling. When I first wrote my letter in support of a proposed farmer's market in my neighborhood, I knew that our surrounding community could sustain it. Now, when there are 10 people in line for whole grain bread or fresh caught fish or 20 people ahead of me for samosas and cilantro chutney I smile and think, "This is how food shopping is supposed to be." But when I don't get to the sprout guy early enough and my peanut and sunflower sprouts are gone, I think, "Hey, go find somewhere else to shop!" Just kidding. No, really.

Everything looked so. good. yesterday. But the find of the week was Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss vegan "ice cream," made from coconut milk. Damn you, Luna & Larry. Damn you! Damn you! Damn you! I didn't need to know about this because now I will be buying a pint every week. And I don't even really like ice cream. It's because it's not ice cream that I love your frozen confection. If it's not available near you, write to them and demand it. It tastes like frozen heaven (nirvana?) on a spoon.

Here's how my week is shaping up:

  • Monday: Turducken leftovers. Yes, turducken. There is a story here and I will blog it soon.
  • Tuesday: Roasted salmon, cold cucumber soup, big salad
  • Wednesday Sandwich night: BLTA's and boxed tomato soup
  • Thursday: Grilled shrimp and sesame noodles (or homemade pho)
  • Friday Family Movie Night: Take out, not sure what yet. (Dinner out with Glennia.)
  • Saturday (date night): Not sure yet
  • Sunday: Something on the grill if the BBQ weather holds.

What are you cooking?

we are just back from Maui so my meal planning this week is a bit rough - call it a work in progress. we did get most of the shopping done, so we are headed in the right direction...

tonight - pizza & turkey wraps at Costco
tues - salmon cakes & asparagus
weds - koresht karafse
thurs - pasta with browned butter & mizithra cheese, broccoli
fri - family night, maybe homemade pizza or BBQ
sat - roast chicken & red skins
sun - teriyaki pork on the BBQ, coconut rice & grilled asparagus

We bought a big ole tri tip on Saturday and I marinated it in soy sauce, olive oil a few smushed cloves of garlic and chopped onions all day Sunday. I broiled it and put the onions in the marinade in the oven at the same time.

Sunday - marinated tri tip with roasted veggies (carrots, broc, beets and zuccini) plus baked potatoes and the onions (yum!).

Monday - tacos featuring tri tip meat with taco seasoning and the last of my first ever cooked from scratch black beans.

Tuesday - was supposed to be salad with sliced tri tip but the kids ate so much of it that we need a new plan. perhaps chicken cutlets plus a rice mix in the rice cooker.

Wednesday - we are going to see Kimya Dawson at the Aladdin and W is taking me to dinner but not sure where. Kids will probably have Mac and Cheese.

Thursday - crazy work day so maybe Thai take out?

Friday - Home made pizza.

We are "going in on a cow" (free range, grass fed, our friends know the farmer, etc.) and expect to get some this Friday. We've never done this before and so are curious.

Planted a bunch of veggies this weekend and we are looking forward to lots of yummy fresh picked veggies this year. Happy Tuesday.

The long version's on my (new!) blog, but here's the short version:

Sunday:
* Butter lettuce wedges with the green goddess dressing from the Chez Panisse Vegetable cookbook
* hamburgers (I grind the meat myself ala Zuni) on toasted Acme herb slab with the usual condiments, onions and organic cheddar from TJ's
* oven-roasted organic russets from TJ's (also ala Zuni)
* strawberry shortcake made with organic Seascape strawberries from the farmer's market, organic cream from TJ's, and biscuits from the Chez Panisse Dessert cookbook
Monday:
Out
Tuesday:
* oven-steamed salmon from the farmer's market
* Lemon risotto with thyme, home made chicken stock and parm.
* Blanched broccoli
* sauteed spinach with garlic
* A starter using two bunches of asparagus, 3 avocados, maybe some romaine spears and...think,think,think!!
Wednesday:
* breakfast for dinner for the kids: eggs, toast, bacon, jam, fruit salad with strawberries, bananas and apples.
* Dandelion salad for the adults: with poached eggs, croutons, bacon lardons and a warm mustard-y vinaigrette.
Thursday:
* pasta with broccoli rabe sauteed with garlic.
* and....? maybe I'll pick up some Niman pork at TJ's, cut each portion into 4 thin slices, pound and pan-saute them.
Friday:
6:15 call for the school play, so we'll see. Probably a big ole snack of pbj's, yogurt, whatever's floating around...The olive spread from the farmer's market with goat cheese on toasted Acme is probably what I'll be having...
saturday:
EVERYTHING in the whole wide world is happening on this day: I'm selling at the PAMP sale, my daughter's going to a mid-afternoon birthday party then performing in the school play again, and her other grandmother is in town....I'm going to let the other grown-ups take care of food this day. Only thing I know for sure is we're having ice cream at Rick's after the play.

OK, so this hardly qualifies as the short version....oh well
