Honolulu, so far

The plane ride went mostly like this. Wallie fell asleep before the plane even took off. Bunny got in her last thumb sucks since we kinda sorta agreed that when she turned six she'd stop. Especially now that she has a wiggly upper front tooth. We'll see.

The planed touched down at 5:00 PM and an hour later, Bunny was doing cannonballs in Tata's pool. Hawaii doesn't follow daylight savings time so it gets dark earlier. Here, the sun is just starting to go down.

The next morning, we headed straight for the beach were Wallie proceeded to freak out and screamed, "CARRY MEEEE!!!! WAAAAH!!!!" as the gentle waves on the island's calmest beach lapped at her toes. Fifteen minutes later, however, happiness reigned supreme:

The water is clear and warm and the sun, even at 9:30 AM is hot on your skin. And this why I won't suffer the beach in California.

Yesterday I also showed the girls a waterfall their great-grandpa designed. He was a landscape architect in the islands and this one is located at a Honolulu hotel...

...where we said hello to these cuties:

Dolphin

When I saw this fresco, I realized I had forgotten the ancient Hawaiian legend of how Hawaii was born. All children in Hawaii learn this in school and can repeat it on command. It goes something like this: A long time ago, a yellow-caped god named Keanu Reeves flew down from the heavens and pulled the Hawaiian islands out of the ocean with a giant rope while Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson blew into a shell to herald their creation. That girl from Whale Rider and her baby looked on while Benjamin Bratt tried to paddle away. The end.

In other words, we're having a great time. Happy 4th everyone.

PS It feel great to be celebrating Indepence Day in the city where Barack Obama was born.

You have the cutest girls in the world. I have six and three year old boys -- too bad arranged marriages are out of fashion...

And love the creation story....funny, funny, funny

omfg, you are hilarious, girl.

I am SO jealous - we are suffering in the fog here right now!

I'm pretty sure I've seen that waterfall!! lol

Can't wait to see your tanned self when you get back!

Keep those kids away from dolphins! Rapists of the Deep! Rapists of the Deep!

Dude, I am totally jealous - it looks like you are having a FANTASTIC time. Enjoy!

Oh, the girls are so beautiful Stefania!

I'm glad you're having a fun (and hopefully relaxing; you deserve it!) vacation.

Also jealous! We are long overdue for a visit to the ILs (who live across the street from that nice calm beach)- I'm hoping my 2 year old enjoys swimming there on our next visit as much as she did as a 7 month old!

Have a Waiola shave ice for me!

I wish I was there- looks like a great vacation.

I'm so glad you were able to get away, Stefania! I've been hungering for a trip to somewhere warm :)

I'll be curious to hear more about Bunny quitting the thumb sucking. My 7 yr old still does it - unconciously, mostly, while asleep. Correction: he'll SHIFT in his sleep and the thumb will pop back in. He usually falls asleep without it. We've tried just about everything, but he winds up pulling off the soccer sock that goes all the way up to his shoulder in his sleep. Or something. Quitting the comfort habit it hard, yo! Thankfully, he doesn't do it in front of anyone so he hasn't been teased yet, but I wonder how it will go when he has a first "friend" sleep-over? He likes his blankie, his thumb, and still can't stay dry at night... did I mention he's 7 and not 2? Yeah. Brilliant, normal kid by day, toddler by night. Dr. says the enuresis is still considered "normal" at this age for boys, but I'll be happy to be done with Good-Nites. he just sleeps like the dead and doesn't wake to wetness. Never has. Hopefully soon. Probably when he masters no thumb sucking. So if you com across a quitting plan that works, share it! My niece? Just "decided" to stop when she was 4. Just like that. (shaking head in wonder). I hope Bunny quits the habit as easily and you don't find yourself with a surrepticious sucker at 7...
