I am working with Safeway's PR firm on a series of posts about
shopping at Safeway, a store I already patronize and have for years. I
participated in a giftcard giveaway and received a giftcard so I could shop the everyday low priced items for myself.
While I was in Hawaii, I stopped into the brand new Safeway in Honolulu (on Kapahulu) to check things out. While my mom had stocked the fridge for us, I needed to pick up more of the things the girls like to eat (McCann's Irish oatmeal, Annie's Mac and Cheese) and needed to get some sunscreen. When I first walked in, I could have sworn I was in my local Safeway in Menlo Park, Calif. It looked exactly the same. I mean exactly:
But upon further inspection, I noticed some things that are only available in the islands. Things like:
Ewa (eh-vah) corn, smaller and sweeter than mainland corn.
Salad greens from the North Shore. So tender and delicious.
Fresh taro leaves for making laulaus or chicken or squid luau.
A meat case full of local portuguese sausage, a spicier more garlicky linguica. The is probably the second most beloved meat in the islands after Spam.
Poi. Of course. This is how poi is normally sold in Hawaii, in bags. You can also find it in plastic containers but this is the old school way.
Somethings are exactly the same. Thousands of great prices here, just like back at home.

My husband nearly fainted when he saw the Poke bars in Hawaii… he insisted on getting one of each kind they had!
