Today the internet is buzzing with the shocking news that fashion designer Alexander McQueen is dead, at 40, of an apparent suicide.
McQueen was born in the East End of London on March 17, 1969. His father was a taxi driver and as a child he made dresses for his three sisters. As a teenager he apprenticed on Savile Row before attending Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. It was his graduation collection that caught the eye of influential stylist Isabella Blow. The two became fast and dear friends until Blow committed suicide on May 7, 2007.
Until I saw the headlines, I didn't even realize he was 40. But of course he was. Who else could come up a white, hardcase suitcase molded in the shape of a skeleton?
He was so one of us.
Goodbye, too soon, to a talented but troubled member of our cohort.
